Six minutes after returning to the pitch, Ronaldo collapsed again and needed another operation.
In Rome, the comeback lasted six minutes. Ronaldo had just returned to the pitch against Lazio when he went down again. The match was over for him before he could find his rhythm. First came the stretcher, then another operation. For Inter, a fresh start became another interruption.
The body cuts the comeback short
The earlier injury had come on November 21, 1999, against Lecce. Ronaldo returned on April 12, 2000, against Lazio. Six minutes later, he fell. The sequence was brief and brutal: carried off on a stretcher, another operation, and no way to continue that season.
Ronaldo missed all of the 2000–01 season. The calendar moved on without him, and the comeback that seemed to begin in Rome had to wait. The image was hard to forget: the striker back on the pitch, then being carried away. Still, that was not where the story ended.
Back with Inter
Before the 2002 World Cup, Ronaldo returned to play for Inter. He also started scoring for the club again. Recovery was no longer a distant promise. He was back on the pitch and ready to wear Brazil’s shirt at the tournament.
In the opening match against Turkey on June 3, Ronaldo scored Brazil’s first goal of the World Cup. His return carried the weight of a lost season and another collapse in Rome. Brazil made it to the final against Germany in Yokohama on June 30.
Two goals to complete the journey
The final’s first half ended goalless. In the 67th minute, Ronaldo put Brazil ahead. Twelve minutes later, Kléberson ran toward the German penalty area and passed to Rivaldo. Rivaldo let the ball run between his legs. Ronaldo collected it, controlled it, and drove a low shot into Oliver Kahn’s left corner.
It was Brazil’s second goal, and Ronaldo’s second in the final. Germany could not answer, and Brazil won 2–0. Ronaldo finished the match with both of his team’s goals, after a recovery shaped by setbacks and waiting.
In Rome, six minutes were enough to bring the comeback down again. In Yokohama, two goals gave the story its ending. Ronaldo was standing, a world champion. The path between those scenes ran through another operation, an entire season out, and the work of returning to play for Inter. The fall remained part of the story. It was no longer the final chapter.
